Moschino Cheap and Chic made The Giraffe their fashion inspiration for Spring 2006. There were giraffe print tops and shoes and leggings and giraffe brooches and giraffe dresses. It's really cute and refreshing and the humour kept it from being an overkill.

This is a fashion nightmare, but the giraffe is so adorable, it makes me smile.

This is my favourite piece. A giraffe print dress - so whimsical and fun. I would love that on a top/dress/bag.

I found one on Shopbop.com, but it doesn't beat the perfect slouchiness this one has. And it's impossible to find something similar in Singapore.

I'm glad that as far as New York is concerned, we're over leggings (almost, at least) and ankle boots and sixties silhouettes. The occasional legging and chunky sixties waist belt does make a small appearance here and there, but the scene seems more geared towards being relaxed casual and resort-like.

Here are my 2 favourites resort-ish outfits so far, and they're both coincidentally, in blue!

Matthew Williamson's collection was gorgeous. Beautiful prints! I absolutely ADORE this dress. The print is unbelievably beautiful and the billowy loose shape is so great for summer!

The beautiful azure in this dress from Chaiken and the model's tan are a lethal combination!

I'm usually not that excited for the New York collections, but the collections so far are more than what I expected (I'm glad all that gloomy stuff is over). I'm really looking forward to Milan and Paris right now.

Gosh. I really love this collection. The styling and the pieces - right down to the slouchy boat shoes and the cool casual accessories - I loved every bit. I especially loved the dresses - the drop waisted silhouettes:

The gorgeous drop waist dresses! This, I think, will definitely be translated to the high street. I love drop waist dresses! And they are simply casual and cool, not the usual repetitive chiffon-y, ruffled, uber-feminine dresses that honestly are starting to bore me.

You know how Marc Jacobs is always so influential in high street styles? Well, here's what I think we can be prepared for if his latest collection is anything to go by:

Tiers - Tiered skirts and dresses mostly, and arranged asymmetrically

Deconstructed - I really hope some of this scruffy deconstructed elements get translated into high street.

Big crystal like thingys (what are they?) that are utterly adorable

Whatever triangular pattern quilt this is, I'm expecting to see a knockoff somewhere.

The most dreaded metallics. I hope this one stays gone. I'm just recovering from seeing cheap looking metallic materials on bags everywhere. I'm not looking forward to see them on shoes and jackets.

More interesting stuff include: cute cotton bomber jackets, casual tshirt dresses, flip flops, tulip pants, harem pants.

Strangely enough, I find many direct similarities between his collection and the previous collections from YSL and Balenciaga. Other than the deconstructed dresses, I don't find anything from this collection particularly exciting but that's the thing with Marc Jacobs' collections - you usually only really pay attention to it after all the fashion week excitement dies down.

I like to think of myself as someone who can accept all kinds of fashion. I'm known among my friends to have weird and strange taste in almost everything. I like weird things! I love quirky thingmajings! But this huge polka dot monstrosity from Betsey Johnson? No freaking way. It looks like a circus explosion - all fuschia and polka dots.

But Betsey Johnson can do good shoes - here's one that I really like. The little embroidery can be a little Juicy Couture-ish, but I still like the spring-y feel of it.

To all Marni fans, Marni has opened it's virtual store. Check out their gorgeous collection of bags and coats! And their necklace collection is to die for :) Their baggy manish cardigans and brooches and signature prints are all so pretty.

Then there's Lukablu, which will be launched in November. Judging from the appearance of the website, as well as the extensive list of brands they claim to carry (Ben Sherman, Botkier, Ella Moss etc), it is gonna be pretty exciting for online shoppers. Does anyone know how old Rachel Zoe is? I was shocked to see such a horrible picture of her from here. This is why everyone should use sunscreen and eat well! You may look "great" in your 20s but after that, you've still got a whole life ahead of you so you don't want to look so wasted in your later years as well. My mom and dad are both in their 50s and they don't even have so many deep wrinkles on their forehead (or any part of their faces for that matter).

I've mentioned before that I do like the idea of wearing tutus in an outfit. This tutu from Australia's Ginger & Smart is a real rare find because tutus are hardly seen in fashion collections. Anyway, I see it being paired beautifully with the season's hottest grey tights and a cute pair of wedges (ballerina flats would be pushing the look a little).

Meanwhile, I found an old article written in 2004 about Australian Ballet commissioning a few designers to create their interpretation of a tutu. The above tutu was designed by Collete Dinnigan.

High street

You can be almost 100% sure that every season, Marc Jacobs as well as his diffusion line, Marc by Marc Jacobs, will be influential when it comes to what's in and out in the high street.

His latest material from his main collection at Marc Jacobs can be a little too esoteric for the young highstreet crowd, but his Marc by Marc Jacobs line is definitely more accessible and adaptable for everyone.

Some elements from his show, like the trapeze shapes and the plaid has already reached high street stores. Take the above Lux 3/4 Sleeve Trapeze Jacket for example. It does bear some resemblence to the Marc by Marc Jacobs version on the top.

Poor student life

I've mentioned several times on my blog that I'm a poor student. And gosh, I really am. Many of the other fashion bloggers out there are rather well-off and can afford to tote huge brand names I can only dream (and blog) about. But I know that with clothes and shoes, especially clothes, labels are (nearly) nothing compared to style. Affordable midrange clothing and shoes can be easily found in Singapore (thank god for Topshop) but what about bags?

Unlike clothes and shoes, it's really difficult to find a good quality and pretty bag in Singapore for affordable prices. Mid range bags from brands like Zara, Topshop, Guess and all those brands are never as attractive as the designs from high end stores. (Thus explaining all the counterfeits) I truly believe, at least until I have been proven wrong, that with bags, the pricer, the better. I don't have the same philosophy with clothes or shoes (Topshop shoes are great!) but really, I have not seen a bag that can truly satisfy my bag lust and yet not burn a hole in my pocket.

At 18 going on 19, I don't need to tote a branded label. But I really want a good bag that won't cause me a shoulder ache, won't wear out so easily and doesn't look like the generic cheap stuff there is nowadays. It's really exasperating shopping for a bag :( And it's really difficult "saving up" to buy a bag just using my allowance or trying to find work, because first of all, much of the money would end up going to stuff I need rather than stuff I want, and second of all, a bag is probably the last of my priorities here. (I'm really hoping I can save up to go on an exchange programme in university) Still, it would be nice to own a cool bag.

Anyway, I really love the shoulder bags from Kooba, Burberry and Chloe! Perfect for school, but I'm not going to be carrying any of these soon. Sigh.

(Consolation: I'm a few years to getting a degree, then I will get to work, then I will be able to free myself from poor student life and finally be able to buy things! But only wisely, of course.)

P.S. Does this seem like an awful amount of talk for this blog? I just felt like saying something since today is officially the last day of my holidays and come Monday, I begin my freshman year in university. Boohoo.

I love all these pictures of Ashley Olsen from Nylon magazine. Forget about whether she's pretty or thin, and I don't care much about the comparisons between her and Mary Kate. Okay, forgive me, this is totally not about fashion.

I've mentioned before I enjoy baking. (Me, the aspiring domestic goddess) And looking at all the wonderful bakes from notes by NAIVE has inspired me to get my baking apron on.

So I made double chocolate muffins. This is the recipe. But I'll type it out here for your convenience, should you wish to try it out too:

Double Chocolate Muffins:

260 g (2 cups, 9.2 ounces) flour
160 g (0.8 cup, 5.6 ounces) granulated sugar
1/2 package baking powder (approx 2 tsps)
20 g (3/4 oz) cocoa powder
1 pinch of salt
2 eggs
8 cl (1/3 cup) vegetable oil
12 cl (½ cup) milk
200 g (1/2 lbs, 7 ounces) chocolate chips

Heat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
Sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt.
Whisk the egg with the oil and milk. Stir this in the dry ingredients until they are moistened. Add the chocolate chips and stir lightly once more.
Fill 12 greased muffin cups, put them in the oven for 20/25 minutes.
After a few minutes, put them on a rack to cool.

Notes: I halved the recipe, but ended up with 10 muffins. And, instead of using chocolate chips, I highly recommend substituting with dark chocolate chunks instead. I used my favourite brand - Morinaga dark chocolate, a brand from Japan.

You've probably already heard tons of information about gold. Gold buttons, gold dresses, gold bags, gold shoes - it's Midas all over the place. Many gold pieces on clothes and accessories from Fall remind me of armours, just like it was at the haute couture runway recently. Like an armour, the gold sections look like they were designed after protective medieval shields, covering the arms, the shoulders and the neck. One could say that this details reflect on the need to protect ourselves from the dangers of today or maybe more designers are looking to medieval influences for inspiration.

New face of Versace

I like Johnathan Rhys Meyers. I did not catch MI3, but I did catch Bend It Like Beckham and Match Point. I think he has a pretty good face.

And finally for Fall I like that Versace is making some better choices for their ad campaign.

Johanathan Rhys Meyers, I've heard from Downtown Darling, will join Kate Moss, Christy Turlington and the rest of the supermodels to be the face for Versace's fall line. But I'm a little worried though, because celebrities don't do very well modelling.

Take Halle Berry's yucky open-mouth-acting-sexy look that's just so not sexy. (She's pretty, but I'm not sure about modelling.) And don't get me started on Demi Moore or Madonna.

Flatteringly oversized

That's what a 'boyfriend shirt' should be like. Flatteringly oversized. Too oversized, say your boyfriend is more hunky than lanky, then it would be difficult to pull off the boyfriend shirt look I posted about earlier.

So what are we to do?

1. Buy a slouchy women's shirt in a larger size. A very slim fit in a larger size would look very bad, so go for casual slouchy fits such as the Bryn shirt from Abercrombie.

2. Better still, buy a "boyfriend shirt". Yes, some shirts are actually named "boyfriend shirts". Something like this cotton poplin shirt from Sundance.

3. Or maybe, a loose fit shirt dress like this one from James Pearce.

4. Or simply just buy a men's shirt. No, a boy's shirt. Like I mentioned in another post, boy cuts would probably fit us ladies better than those from the men's department. (And isn't it fun to be shopping for clothes at the kids department?) This boy's oxford is from J.Crew.

Ralph Lauren boys

According to Elle UK, Kate Moss was spotted buying a navy blazer from Ralph Lauren Boys.

Just like I mentioned in my post previously about men's shirts, I'm open to trying on men's fashion. And boy cuts are great since they suit a smaller frame. Moreover, Ralph Lauren boys caters to boys up to the age of 20, so there surely is something that would fit. And even if it doesn't entirely fit, it would look nice a little cropped.

Just another note, don't you find that the boys and girls in children's fashion ads just look so cool?

Red Ribbon

Recently, I posted some sexy lace-up heels. Here's something also involving some tying up - ribbon pumps. We're very used to seeing ribbons on shoes already, like at the back of shoes or just on the top. But this 2 pairs from Moschino Cheap and Chic (left) and Louis Vuitton (right) are tied across the foot. The huge ribbon makes the sharp patent leather look more fun and playful.

I'm guessing it is possible to try this with a pair of black patent leather shoes yourself - I'm thinking, you can just simply tie the ribbon around your foot before wearing the shoe (it sounds like a stupid idea though) ...or you could attach the ribbon on the inside lining of your shoes somehow.

Stella McCartney

I didn't pay the Stella McCartney collection much attention previously. The all-blue collection just looked too boring to me. But after closer observation, I've noticed several beautiful pieces in her collection.

I think the ~~leather~~ faux-leather boot is the best boot I've seen in the collection so far. It's cool and slick and sexy in a Dominatrix-leather kind of way. I especially love the tie detail at the back and I could wear that in this tropical weather.

The big ~~leather~~ non-leather bag has a gorgeous shade of blue and the shiny ~~leather~~ material-which-totally-fooled-me-was-leather just makes me swooooon.

And last but not least, the supergorg coat! It's such a fine shade of azure! It's bound to stop people in their tracks if worn among the sea of blacks and whites in fall. And the fabric has a gorgeous sheen that moves with your walk. Yummy!

Is Manila the new Bangkok?

After reading an article from a local newspaper about new places to jet to around the region (i.e. Asia), I've got a newfound interest in the Philippines, specifically Manila. After all, it houses the third largest mall in the world. And I can imagine the cornucopia of delicious street food.

I've also just discovered Manila Style (via La Femme), documenting really quirky fashion from the city. It does remind me a little of Bangkok's avant-garde weirdness. And what with budget airlines all over the place, travelling there from here isn't going to cost any more than going to Bangkok.

If you still think lowrise jeans are "like-the-coolest-stuff-ever!", you've got a lot of catching up to do. Designers have started embracing high waisted sihouettes from a few seasons ago and many have even brought back that high-waisted jeans from the 90s, just that this time, they are not acidwashed and baggy.

They are drainpipe-skinny and help you hide your tummy if you have (a small) one. I hear Ghost is the best brand for high-waisted jeans and the first pair above as seen on the runway is wayy cooler than any denim-overalls. And even Topshop unique has taken the look to the highstreet.

But be warned, such skinny highwaisted jeans are only good for people who have slim hips to flaunt.

I love Fall's pleated dresses! There is a fine line between Grecian Goddess and Grandma for pleats. Sometimes too much ruching can make you look like you've got a protruding tummy or a huge butt, even if you don't have one. So look for flattering pleats - the more the number of pleats, the smaller they should be. And if there is ruching, it should only be at flattering areas. (not at the tummy/butt!)

It shouldn't be difficult to find a pretty pleated dress today. Many vintage pieces have pleats. Here's a few vintage finds of ebay:

You've gotta love this Pleated Trapeze Dress. It's so cute and feminine. It could be worn as a dress over a slipdress or can be worn as a top, with a nice black cami beneath, great for relaxing on a hot afternoon. Bids start at US$9.90 only! (I would really really buy this if I could!)

And this is not from ebay, but rather shopbop. This Pleated Cami Dress from Rebecca Taylor is also very pretty for summer. I could see myself wearing this with a black tuxedo-esque vest and a pair of black wedges and a long gold necklace :)

I don't usually like Vivienne Westwood, but I absolutely adore the hoodie-trenches at her Fall collection. The baby blue hoodie trench on the left is tres cute!

Looking at the fall collection from Mike and Chris just makes you gasp with pleasure and delight. They too, have a hoodie trench in the loveliest olive green, pictured in the middle. I absolutely love the white pieces with that scarf-neckline detail. That's high-fashion details at high-street prices!

And then there are also delicious leather pieces from their leather and bag collections. What's not to love?

All tangled up

I know many people out there take extra special care for their clothes and accessories. For me, I want to, but I'm hell lazy.

So I lump all my earrings and necklaces in a little drawer by the side of by desk and that's that. And I find myself spending an hour or two the night before the big night out untangling the necklaces, baffled how so many damn knots could form by themselves.

It was so annoying that I started hanging the necklaces at the edge of the little shelf on my desk but I wished there was a better way I could store them.

This Medallion Brocade Necklace Stand would be gorgeous on any table, but I question the usefulness of it because necklaces still can be tangled up when just stacked one on the other.

This Enamel Necklace Stand however, I see as being more useful because the necklaces could be hung either one on top or the other, or side by side.

They're both beautiful! I love all the pretty little things at Urban Outfitters apartment. They're pretty yet affordable and they're like a fashion collection - every piece has a special unique style, yet they can be put all in the same house and still work.

Simply beautiful. Karl Lagerfeld's latest Chanel couture collection never fails to impress me. This time, he embraces the new proportions (just like Galliano did for the Sienna Miller leggings) by introducing a leggy collection. But there are no highstreet style leggings here. The usual chanel-isms were still very much present. The baroque jewels and the little black (and navy) dresses were among the many ladylike details.

I thought style.com's term "Mod Medieval" was very apt. While there were armour-like qualities to some dresses, the silhouette remained very modern (and Mary Quant). What with Dior's gladiator armour ladies, I think medieval influences are going to be much bigger in the next readytowear collections.

Does anyone know if any of the retail stores in Singapore sell Elle Macpherson intimates? I just saw the above bra (called Coranto) on the Oprah show and I love it! If there's one thing I don't mind spending the big bucks on, it's pretty lingerie.

I do know that you can get Elle Macpherson shipped to Singapore online at Zodee.com (above link is for the Singapore dollars site). But payment is by credit card and the item is shipped from overseas and I just think it's pretty unwise to buy bras without trying them out. Anyway, you can get Love Kylie stockings as well as other good quality Australian brands from the site. The Coranto bra is priced at S$63.

Meanwhile, I'll keep searching for some more lingerie options. Anyone care to share their favourite brands?

JellyGirl's entry on DIY accessories reminded me of a designer I have yet to mention here. I first saw Pinc at the Fash Bash flea market at Ink Club Bar some time back. Her handmade jewellery are gorgeous and intricate and as with most places, always sold out.

Prices tend towards the higher side, but I can see why. Most of the charms and materials used here are slightly more difficult to find than your usual beads and baubles. So if you want to secure a purchase, subscribe to the mailing list!

This is supposedly what Harper's August issue was to look like, but was scrapped by Britney. The gossip I've heard on the other hand is that Britney bailed on the shoot, and therefore no pictures were taken. So I don't know if this is just photoshop at work. But, if this is for real, then my question is: What was Harper's even thinking?!!! Let's not even begin on how uncomfortable that picture makes me feel. Let's talk about how did Britney even get invited to do a Harper's cover.

I don't even understand why the paparazzi are still even taking pictures of Britney. (Maybe just to have someone to diss) But a fashion magazine hiring her to be on the cover? That's really really desperate! (Ooh, I just remembered that ELLE had her on their cover last year.)

I'm totally in love with the livejournal retail scene in singapore. The websites are well put together, the products are mostly handmade and are very interesting and quirky, and the prices are reasonable.

Here's a new one I've just discovered - Crymeajustin, which sells really quirky and affordable trinkets and charms. The only downside to all these selling journals is that most of them are strictly one-piece only, which kinda sucks if you're too slow.

After a long long long holiday, I'm finally going back to school in August. I haven't really done enough school shopping, but I have a few stuff on my to-get list. My favourite shoe from Spring 2006 would be this pair of round toe wedge from Chloe. They go great with the summer dresses of Spring - billowy babydolls. There aren't many copies/cheaper versions around though, which is pretty sad because the original has a $670 pricetag. (Topshop seems to be more busy copying Miu Miu's shoes instead)

The Good
I think wearing a tutu is extremely great. And pairing it with a skull motif sweat says rockchick all the way. More and more good stuff.

The Bad
Many might disagree, but part of style is knowing what goes with your body. What works for one body, might not work on another. I'm still have yet to fall out of favour with leggings, but they do not go well with chunky thighs. Cropped jackets add bulk, so if there is already bulk, don't add any more. See how cropped jackets and tight pants can work on a different size. The tight fitting tops show those bulges clearly and those belts only serve to emphasize the hip. You don't have to despair if you're big, style is not limited by size. For one, don't just buy into the skinny pants trend when you know you look better in loose fit ones.

The Freaky
This combination of socks on leggings, printed gloves and your baby cousin's handmedown Disney shirt is just too freaky, too weird. (And with the overall look and styling, I have no clue if this person is a guy or a girl) I've also noticed that these canvas bags seem very popular with the people pictured on the website.

Finally, I've decided to post something about the runway.
Some winter-friendly looks I love:

It seems like Yellow is going to be a key colour for Fall. Which is good. I lurve the Tory Burch look - very suitable for downtown streetwear. A parka over a sunshineyellow satin baby doll, cigarette jeans and leather boots - that's all the cool streetwear rolled into one! And the Nina Ricci outfit can be a little OTT but I think it's pretty cute - gladiator gold with a yellow mansuit - also very trendy. But don't go down this road (Maison Martin Margiela)!

Are Leggings over? Personally, I still like how leggings look. If you have great legs, who cares? Wear them! Moreover, the cold winter is the perfect excuse to wear extra coverage for those pins, so don't throw them out yet. It's all about balancing the silhouette - skinny legs are best enhanced with a more structured bulky top as seen in Paco Rabane's beautiful jacket + legging combo. And more about yellow, a dark-coloured pair of leggings (and yes, flats) can be worn with a nice bright summery dress like Missoni's to give it a different twist.

Scarves! Knitted ones, fur ones, cashmere, cableknit - this is the season for the scarf. Especially if the weather is like in Singapore - summer all year round - scarves are the only winter-ish wear you can experiment with in comfort. Numerous ways to do it, for e.g, a more classic style from Behnaz Sarafpour or a more experimental style ala Kenzo.

That elusive mascara

Where is that perfect mascara that holds a curl, thickens beautifully, lengthens without becoming spidery and darkens without smudges? Is it the solution? The brush? The technique? Is the primer necessary (the only one I've used is L'Oreal double extend, I don't like the primer + mascara together)

And reviews aren't as reliable as trying out the product yourself. Just look at the mixed reviews at Makeup Alley for the different products. No one is unanimous on a particular mascara!

And many products are not available in Singapore - unless you buy them online. Someone please bring in Max Factor, Smashbox, Rimmel, Benefit (and many many more)! On the high side, we have access to many asian-made products, especially those from Japan and Korea (Kanebo, Kose, Cosme Decorte (a high-end Kose brand. I love the texture of their eyeshadows).

I've tried the famous Dejavu Fiberwig - supposedly the best selling mascara in Japan. It does absolutely nothing for me. It doesn't clump and seperates pretty well, but there is only minimum lengthening and zero thickening. So it's just like putting Vaseline on the lashes. Just goes further to prove that not everything works on everyone.

Trompe Loeil has already taken off so maybe it's going to be outoutout soon, but meanwhile, I still love Trompe Loeil tshirts. These Urban Outfitters look cheesy and so outlandish. Which is what trompe l'oeil is all about!

I also like this Limited Edition Artist Racerback in Hellion for it's oversized fit and of course, the sketchbook illustration. Would go great with a pair of shorts.

This is not about fashion, but it's a rave. I don't know if I'm the only one kept in the dark for such a long time, but this is the first time I've discovered Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio's work. I've just borrowed Hungry Planet from the library and I was absolutely blown away by the beautiful pictures and the wonderful topic. (I love food as much, or actually, more than I love fashion) If you love to discover new cultures and admire beautiful photography, then you would love the Menzel and D'Aluisio team. This book, in particular, is hugely inspiring. I've no doubt that their other works are just as great.
