Derek Lam

The best of Derek Lam S/S'06 - Click to Enlarge

Derek Lam joined the trend of the new minimalism, which applies variations around texture: folded, ruffles and eyelets, to name a few. For its collection for summer 2006, innocent details like puff-sleeves, big buttons and peter-pan collars gave strength to his simple and elegant medley of whites, ivories and blacks. The pretty tweed tunics and suits in the style of Jackie O, the organza white tunics, the ivory Empire-line chiffon cocktail dresses (which reminded us of Fall) and the lovely black and white seperates with the amazing variety of cuts, shapes and styles all gave the feel of weightlessness and ease, enhancing Lam's theme of "Paradise Lost". Despite the clean colour palette, a bright blue satin piece with a delightful black peter-pan collar stood out from the lot. Meanwhile. the dainty peeptoes give us a peep for what is to come next year while the rest of the accessories were kept simple, a wreath of florals and a floppy summer hat were all you needed.

With Derek Lam, one of my favourite collections so far, the distractions were left out, only to let the elegant essentials stand out so well.
