S/S 06: Darkness and Evil

Art imitates life.

In the past few years, the world has experienced numerous tragedies. We all know what they are.
Some said it was the end of the world, others claimed that the devil was at work. Evil became a tangible force, causing much grief and mourning. The fashion world has been affected no doubt and some designers have been inspired to sew life's sorrow on their work.

Camilla Staerk's S/S 06 collection had an ominous spooky feel throughout. Even her summer dresses were grey and printed with looming eagles out on a scavenger hunt. The swimsuits were not merry and they too had that dark eagle motif. Models decked in all-black outfits and stern expressions looked like they were mourning for the ghosts in our midst. A heavy sense of foreboding hung in midair.

Veronique Branquinho's collection took a different direction. It reminded me a little more of the fantasy world kind of evil - with Voldermort capes and Tim Burton style prints. Perhaps she was inspired by the dark forces apparent in children's fairytale worlds or maybe she was also reflecting the coiling miasma that permeates our earth. It looked more like evil than grief (unlike Camillia Staerk) , with dark eyes, dark shoes and dark leather gloves.

Let's hope that the melancholy and anguish doesn't extend any further. I want to celebrate Spring.
