A/W'06 - Comme-ntary

Rei Kawakubo couldn't decide if she wanted to make frilly dresses or sharp men's suits so she merged the two extremes and created a theme of disguises and masks. Yes, masks AGAIN. Masks as seen in Viktor & Rolf, masks as seen at Hermes, masks at Undercover and now, Zorro meets the Phantom of the Opera at Commes Des Garcons. Masks will now be the thing of A/W 2006 - and will not come back in the near future lest someone wants to risk being passe.

This social satire of sexuality also comes at a time when Junya Watanabe decides to remind the world of the war and Galliano weaves a story about America's gloom and doom. Just like the movies Syriana, Munich, Crash and Brokeback Mountain, it's good to see artists capturing the zeitgeist in their work. But at the end of the day, fashion is just fashion and shouldn't be taken so seriously. Lighten up Junya! At least Kawakubo made it funny.
